According to local state media, On Friday the Vietnamese police found around 2,000 dead cats at a slaughterhouse that was intended for use in traditional medicine.
According to the official provincial newspaper, Along with 480 live animals, the dead bodies of thousands of cats were found at a slaughterhouse on Thursday in Dong Thap province in the Mekong Delta.
The Vietnamese police found dead cats in cold storage and are believed to send northern Vietnam. While some Vietnamese believe that cat bones could cure some serious disease conditions such as asthma and osteoporosis.
According to the animal welfare organization Four Paws International approximately that approximately million cats are victims of slaughtering illegal wildlife trade every year in Vietnam.
In Vietnam consumption of dogs and cats is legal and usual. Many local restaurants serve the meat but no one is there to examine the meat and inspect certificates to show the origin of the animals.
Dong Thap Slaughterhouse failed to provide any paperwork that could authorize the killings and detail traceability. While no one has been arrested in the case so far.
The traditional medicine industry is a major driver of the illegal wildlife trade in Asia, and Vietnam is both a consumption and transport hub.
