Canada could reduce foreign student visas over the rising cost of housing

The government of Canada will consider limiting foreign student visas after the cost of housing has skyrocketed in recent years, Sean Fraser, the new Housing Minister said.

In 2022, there were more than 800,000 international students with active visas, and in 2012 up from 275,000, the official data shows.

In recent years, Canada become the popular and busiest destination for foreign students since it is relatively easy to acquire a work permit.

Fraser, the former immigration minister, said that the intense climb in the number of students was setting pronounced tension in several housing markets.

When he was asked, whether a cap could be set on the number of international students, he replied that he believe that is one of the possibilities that we ought to think about.

He added that the government has not made the decision yet.

Fraser told reporters that we have got temporary immigration schedules that were never planned to notice such a fierce increase in such a brief span of time.

In 2025, the 39.5 million populated country, Canada, intends to carry in a record 500,000 new permanent residents in 2025. Fraser said restricting the number of newcomers was not the solution.
