A powerful explosion that reverberated through the Zagorsk Optical-Mechanical Plant, an optical and electronic equipment design and manufacturing company located just outside Moscow, has left a total of 52 people injured, with three of them in critical condition. The incident unfolded on Wednesday, prompting swift emergency responses and raising concerns about the safety protocols within the facility.

Preliminary investigations by RT indicate that the blast originated from within the pyrotechnics warehouse situated within the premises of the factory. The aftermath of the explosion saw a significant number of individuals requiring medical assistance, with the governor of the Moscow Region, Andrey Vorobyev, initially reporting 31 injuries, including three critical cases. However, the count later surged to 43, with six individuals suffering from burns and head injuries being admitted for intensive care treatment.

Amid the chaos, concerns have been raised about potential victims trapped under debris and rubble, with an estimate of up to five people still unaccounted for.

The aftermath of the explosion prompted a comprehensive mass evacuation plan to be put into action, encompassing not only the factory but also nearby facilities, ensuring the safety of those in the vicinity.

Videos captured by local media showcased thick plumes of smoke rising from the factory, casting a somber shadow over the surrounding structures. The incident also led to windows shattering in approximately ten nearby buildings, while office ceilings in several structures reportedly caved in due to the shockwave.

According to the Russian news agency RIA Novosti, the explosion is believed to have been caused by a violation of technical protocols within the factory.

Footage released on Telegram by the channel Mash depicted the fiery explosion and subsequent billows of smoke, offering a visual glimpse into the scale of the incident.

Emergency response teams swiftly descended upon the scene, and traffic around the factory premises was promptly restricted to manage the situation. As investigations continue to unfold, questions are being raised about the safety measures and protocols in place at the Zagorsk Optical-Mechanical Plant.
