Xi Jinping, the President of China, and Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia missing this week’s G20 summit in New Delhi, India has nothing to do with India and is not unusual, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Indian Foreign Minister told the ANI news agency.
Sherpas of the G20 nations are negotiating to build an accord and arrive at a declaration in two days, September 9-10, summit in New Delhi, Indian FM said in the interview.
When he was asked if Putin and Xi are missing the summit because they are bothered by India, Jaishankar replied that he does not believe it has anything to do with India.
I believe whatever decision they make, I suggest they would know best, But I would not at all notice it the way you would suggest, he said.
When he was questioned about whether Xi and Putin’s absence would impact creating a consensus and producing a declaration at the end of the summit, Jaishankar replied that we are negotiating right now…the clock did not begin ticking yesterday.
He added that expectations from G20 are “very high” and India encounters the challenge of negotiating with a “very tough world” spinning under the effect of the pandemic, conflict, climate change, debt, and politics.
G20 groups the 20 main economies of the globe and its heads aim to attempt and uncover answers to some of the world’s pressing issues although a serious geopolitical divide over the battle in Ukraine risks any improvement.
But the absence of Putin and Xi as well as divisions over the battle suggest it would be challenging to reach a consensus Leaders Declaration at the summit, analysts and officials have said.
