Iranian American Dual Nationals Shifted to House Arrest After Detention in Iran’s Evin Prison

In a recent development, five Iranian American dual nationals, who were previously held in Iran’s notorious Evin Prison, have been moved to house arrest by Iranian authorities. The announcement was made by the White House on Thursday, signaling a shift in the status of these detainees.

While the White House acknowledged Iran’s decision to transfer the individuals to house arrest as a positive step, it remained steadfast in its demand for their complete release from detention.

National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson expressed the view that while the move to house arrest is encouraging, it should be noted that these US citizens should not have been detained in the first place. She emphasized, “Of course, we will not rest until they are all back home in the United States.”

Reports confirm that Siamak Namazi, Emad Shargi, Morad Tahbaz, along with an unidentified fourth individual, have been released from their detention. A fifth American has also been confirmed to have been released by a US National Security Council official.

Jared Genser, the legal representative for Siamak Namazi, confirmed that four of the dual nationals have been visually confirmed as having left Tehran’s Evin Prison. Babak Namazi, Siamak’s brother, cautiously welcomed the development, stating, “While this is a positive change, we will not rest until Siamak and others are back home; we continue to count the days until this can happen.”

Siamak Namazi’s initial arrest dates back to 2015, resulting in a subsequent 10-year prison sentence on security-related charges, as reported by the BBC.

The sister of Emad Shargi expressed confidence in the efforts of President Biden and government officials to secure her brother’s release, following his detention in April 2018.

Morad Tahbaz, a 67-year-old businessman and dedicated wildlife conservationist, was originally detained in January 2018, reportedly in connection with his involvement in a campaign against environmental activists.

Past instances have seen Iran detaining and imprisoning dual nationals on grounds of national security. Ongoing negotiations between the United States and Iran aim to secure the release of these detainees through potential prisoner exchanges involving Iranians held in Western prisons, in addition to discussions regarding the easing of US sanctions on Iran.
