Maranda Schossow’s routine drive home turned into a frantic escape as houses ignited in flames with alarming speed. The streets she had known transformed into an unrecognizable scene, with ash descending like somber confetti. Ke‘eaumoku Kapu, director of Nā ‘Aikāne o Maui Cultural Center, demonstrated immense courage by returning to the fire-ravaged area to aid those who couldn’t evacuate.
