Storm Daniel flood that destroyed eastern Libya has taken the lives of at least 6,000 people and left behind about 30,000 people homeless. While 10,000 people’s fates are still not known.
The flood struck the cities of Bayda, Benghazi, al-Marj, and Susa on Sunday and Monday. But it was the port city of Derna that deteriorated the most after two dams overflowed upstream, discharging tremendous volumes of water that ripped through the city.
Bodies are still being retrieved and rescue teams are working day and night to even access Derna and other towns cut off by storm deterioration. External help only began reaching Derna on Tuesday, more than 36 hours after the tragedy hit.
