In a tragic turn of events, a blood transfusion center located in the north-eastern part of Ukraine has been struck by a Russian-guided air bomb, resulting in a loss of lives and multiple injuries.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the devastating incident, which took place in the Kupiansk community within the Kharkiv region on a fateful Saturday night.
As news emerged, President Zelensky revealed that rescue teams are currently grappling with a raging blaze ignited by the strike. He emphasized the importance of confronting terrorism head-on, asserting that defending against such acts is a matter of honor for those who hold life in high regard.
While Russia has yet to issue a public response regarding the reported attack, President Zelensky took to social media to condemn the perpetrators, branding them as “beasts” with the intention to eradicate the very foundations that sustain daily life. He underscored that the heinous act itself serves as a testament to the extent of Russian aggression.
Despite the absence of specific casualty and injury figures in the president’s statement, the gravity of the situation was palpable.
At present, the BBC has not independently verified the details of the incident.
The city of Kupiansk and its surrounding areas had previously fallen under the control of Russian forces during Moscow’s comprehensive invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. However, these territories were reclaimed during a rapid Ukrainian counter-offensive in September of the same year.
President Zelensky further disclosed that Russia executed a separate missile attack on the same day, targeting the aeronautical company Motor Sich situated in the western Khmelnytskyi region.
These alarming Russian strikes follow Moscow’s accusations against Ukraine for allegedly targeting a Russian tanker, which was carrying 11 crew members in the Black Sea – marking the second such sea drone attack in as many days.
Russian maritime authorities reported that the Sig tanker suffered damage to its engine room in the Kerch Strait, though no casualties were reported.
The Kerch Strait serves as a vital passage connecting the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov, acting as a dividing line between Crimea – a Ukrainian peninsula annexed by Russia in 2014 – and Russia’s Taman peninsula.
While Ukraine has refrained from making any official statements regarding this incident, an undisclosed source within the Ukrainian security service informed the BBC that a sea drone was indeed employed in the attack. As the situation develops, the world watches with concern, as the region continues to grapple with ongoing tensions and conflict.
