WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump on Wednesday stated that eight planes were shot down during the May 2025 clash between nuclear-armed Pakistan and India, highlighting his role in brokering the ceasefire that ended the conflict.
In an interview with a private TV channel, Trump said media reports had varied, with some claiming seven aircraft were downed and others reporting damage. He clarified that the actual number was eight planes.
Trump Credits Trade and Diplomacy for Averting War
Trump emphasized that his intervention played a key role in preventing further escalation. Speaking about his discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistani leaders, he said:
“We said ‘no, we’re not doing any deals if you’re going to fight,’ and within 24 hours that was the end of that. It was amazing, actually.”
Trump has repeatedly claimed that trade agreements and economic pressure have prevented multiple wars, including this confrontation between Pakistan and India.
Background of the May 2025 Clash
The May 2025 conflict marked the worst military showdown between Pakistan and India in decades, triggered by a terrorist attack on tourists in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK)’s Pahalgam area. India alleged Pakistan’s involvement, which Islamabad denied.
Following the attack, India conducted unprovoked strikes in Pakistan, prompting Pakistan’s Armed Forces to retaliate with Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos. During the 87-hour conflict, Pakistan reportedly downed seven Indian Air Force jets, including three Rafale fighter jets, and several drones.
Ceasefire and US Involvement
The clash ended on May 10, 2025, with a ceasefire agreement brokered by the US. Trump emphasized the role of diplomacy in averting a potential nuclear confrontation, stating during a White House Diwali celebration in October:
“And we have no war with Pakistan and India. That was a very, very good thing.”
Trump also praised PM Modi, calling him “a great person” and a friend, underscoring the personal relationships he leveraged to stabilize the region.
Trump’s Broader Claims
Throughout 2025, Trump has credited himself with preventing eight wars through what he describes as “deals and trade,” highlighting his approach to combining economic influence with diplomacy to manage global conflicts.
