The already volatile situation in Ukraine took a dangerous turn when missiles struck two buildings in the eastern city of Dnipro, leaving at least five people injured. The attack, which occurred on a Friday evening, caused significant damage to a large residential tower block’s top floor, as confirmed by a BBC team on the ground. The Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, blamed “Russian missile terror” for the destructive incident, which also targeted a building belonging to Ukraine’s security services (SBU).
In a video posted on social media, President Zelensky showcased the aftermath of the missile strikes, with smoke billowing from the damaged structures and a fire raging at street level. He promptly convened emergency meetings with key authorities, including the SBU, interior ministry, emergency services, and local officials, to assess the situation and plan a response.
Among the injured were two children, aged 14 and 17, who were luckily being treated at home. As of the latest reports, no fatalities have been recorded. However, the attack marks the third time the SBU building has been targeted by Russia, as revealed by Dnipro Mayor Borys Filatov. It is worth noting that both targeted buildings were relatively empty during the time of the attack. The residential tower block, recently completed, had its units up for sale when the missiles struck.
As tensions escalate in the region, neighboring Russia claimed to have intercepted two Ukrainian missiles over its southern Rostov region, which borders Ukraine. The Russian defense ministry reported that the first S-200 missile was aimed at “residential infrastructure” in the southern port city of Taganrog, injuring 15 people due to falling debris. The second missile was downed near the city of Azov, with debris landing in an unpopulated area.
Taganrog, situated along the coast of the Sea of Azov and approximately 25 miles (40 km) from the Ukrainian border, is also strategically located on the road leading to the port city of Mariupol. Mariupol has previously been devastated by Russian shelling during the ongoing conflict.
The incidents have escalated tensions in the region and raised concerns about further civilian casualties and military engagements. The international community is closely monitoring the situation as diplomatic efforts continue in search of a peaceful resolution to the escalating crisis in Ukraine. The safety and well-being of civilians must remain a top priority amidst the ongoing hostilities.
