As King Charles III ascended to the British throne on September 8, 2022, succeeding his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, numismatic history was made with the introduction of his inaugural definitive coinage.
The Royal Mint orchestrated a collaborative effort, bringing together their internal product design and technical teams, the Royal Mint Advisory Committee (RMAC), and external artists to curate a collection of eight distinctive coin designs. These designs bear significance, symbolizing the unity of the four nations constituting the United Kingdom and underscoring King Charles III’s fervent commitment to preserving the natural world. King Charles III’s hands-on involvement in the design process underscores his profound passion for craftsmanship and the arts.
The inception of these coin designs commenced with pen-and-ink sketches and culminated in the submission of nearly 300 reverse designs, contributed by approximately 70 artists. These creative proposals were meticulously examined by the Royal Mint Advisory Committee (RMAC), which eventually selected the final designs for the new coinage. Notably, the chosen designs were crafted by talented artists including Edgar Fuller, Gilbert Ledward, Cecil Thomas, and William Gardner.
