Chandrayaan-3: India’s moon landing tension builds up after Russia’s Luna-25 crash

On Monday, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) posted images of its spacecraft, Chandrayaan-3, on platform X, formerly Twitter, as it headed for an attempted landing on the lunar south pole, just days after the crash of Russia’s spacecraft.

Chandrayaan-3, the Indian spacecraft, had been in a competition with Russia to be the first to land on the lunar south pole.

On Sunday, as the news of Luna-25, Russian spacecraft, mission broke, ISRO said that Chandrayaan-3 was on approach to land on Aug 23.

With #Vikram healthy in pre-landing orbit of 25km x 134km, and the landing time out at 18:04Hrs on 23rd Aug (<71hrs)- the next 3 days will be nothing less than ‘terrific’!

Eagerly looking forward to the landing!

The Indian space mission is the country’s second try to land on the south pole of the moon. Chandrayaan-2 mission successfully deployed an orbiter but it crashed in 2019.

The rough landscape makes a south pole landing challenging, but creating a first landing would be historic.

In released images by the ISRO, it showed holes on the moon’s surface captured by the ISRO craft’s Lander Hazard Detection and Avoidance Camera.

Chandrayaan-3 mission took off on 14 July, the lander module of the Indian spacecraft disconnected from the propulsion module last week.

ISRO agency said that they have learned from the past and made modifications to Chandrayaan-3 that would make a mission successful.
