King Charles’ Charity Cleared of Ongoing Bribery Investigation Amid Uproar

The Prince’s Foundation, a charity established by King Charles, has been cleared of an ongoing bribery investigation despite the strong uproar from protesters and critics. The decision by the Metropolitan Police to drop the investigation has sparked controversy and raised questions about transparency and accountability.

Initially, the Met Police had been looking into allegations that the Prince’s Foundation, set up by the then Prince of Wales, had provided assistance to a Saudi donor in obtaining an honor. However, the investigation has now been halted.

The investigation stemmed from a 2021 exposé by the Sunday Times, which revealed that Michael Fawcett, the former chief executive of the charity, had allegedly offered a Saudi donor an honor in exchange for financial contributions. Fawcett was accused of promising to facilitate an honorary Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) for Saudi billionaire Mahfouz Marei bin Mahfouz.

Mahfouz was awarded an honorary CBE in late 2016, and it was suggested that his donations were linked to restoration projects that King Charles had a significant interest in. However, a spokesperson from Clarence House, the official residence of the Prince of Wales, stated that King Charles had “no knowledge of the alleged offer of honors or British citizenship on the basis of donation to his charities.”

During the course of the investigation, two individuals were interviewed, and more than 200 documents were reviewed. The decision to halt the investigation came after careful consideration of the information gathered and with input from the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS). In an official statement, the Metropolitan Police announced that they would not proceed with any further action in relation to the case.

Buckingham Palace responded to the announcement by emphasizing that the decision by the Metropolitan Police was noted, and any remaining inquiries would be handled by the Prince’s Foundation. The controversy surrounding the case has drawn the attention of anti-monarchy protesters, with the Republic protest group describing the decision to drop the investigation as “appalling.”

This development raises concerns about the impartiality and effectiveness of investigations involving high-profile figures and organizations. The decision to clear the Prince’s Foundation of any wrongdoing has ignited debates about accountability within charities associated with royalty and the transparency of their operations.
