In a region long marred by conflict, tensions have once again erupted as Hamas launched an unprecedented attack against southern Israel, prompting a swift response from Israeli forces. The violence comes after years of ongoing brutality, pushing the Palestinian territory to take a powerful stance against the occupied Israeli forces.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has intervened, urging Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to seek “calm and stability” amid the escalating violence, which has already claimed the lives of over 200 individuals on both sides.
Hamas’s audacious assault on southern Israel involved the firing of more than 5,000 rockets from the Gaza Strip. This was followed by fighters breaching Israel’s borders, leaving Israelis in a state of “tremendous shock,” according to reports.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wasted no time in responding, declaring war against Palestine and emphasizing that Hamas had made a “grave mistake.” The incursion marked a significant infiltration of Hamas fighters into Israel from Gaza, making it one of the most serious confrontations with Tel Aviv in recent years.
In anticipation of prolonged conflict, Gaza residents rushed to stock up on essential supplies. Hamas military commander Mohammad Deif declared the commencement of the operation, calling on Palestinians worldwide to join the fight and revealing that “5,000 rockets were fired.”
This significant escalation marks the most serious outbreak of violence between Israel and Hamas since a 10-day war in 2021.
Late on Saturday, the US State Department revealed that Secretary Blinken had urged the Palestinian Authority to take steps to restore calm and stability in the West Bank. Blinken reiterated the US’ strong condemnation of Hamas’ attacks against Israel and called on regional leaders to do the same.
Prime Minister Netanyahu emphasized that “our enemy will pay a price unlike any it has ever known,” underscoring Israel’s determination to prevail in the ongoing conflict.
Reports emerged of gunmen infiltrating Israeli homes, forcing residents to seek refuge in bomb shelters. Defence Minister Gallant stated that Hamas had “launched a war against the State of Israel,” with Israeli troops engaged in combat across various locations.
Hamas media displayed videos showing the bodies of Israeli soldiers brought into Gaza by fighters. Reports also indicated that armed Palestinians were within Israeli homes and patrolling towns in occupied areas. Palestinian media reported the capture of several Israelis by fighters, with Hamas media circulating footage appearing to show a destroyed Israeli tank.
While the Israeli military acknowledged the reports of captives, it provided no further details. In a briefing with reporters, an Israeli military spokesperson declined to comment.
Prime Minister Netanyahu’s office announced his intention to meet with top security officials, and Defence Minister Gallant authorized the call-up of reservists in response to the escalating conflict. The situation remains volatile, with both sides closely watching the unfolding developments in the region.
