Cynthia Erivo’s remarkable transformation into Elphaba for the upcoming Wicked film, directed by Jon M. Chu, has captivated fans and showcased the incredible artistry behind the film’s production. The actress, known for her powerful performances, will bring the beloved green-skinned character to life in a visual adaptation of the iconic Broadway musical.
The transformation process began long before filming started, with makeup and hair designer Frances Hannon leading the charge. According to People, Hannon and her team began experimenting in the summer of 2022 to develop a custom green makeup formula that would adapt to various lighting conditions.
While testing products on models with skin tones similar to Erivo’s, Hannon encountered challenges with standard makeup formulas, as many of them turned gray in dim lighting. The breakthrough came when she discovered a discontinued Canadian cream eyeshadow with a neon base, which proved to be the perfect solution for creating a vibrant, long-lasting green shade.
To ensure the formula’s consistency and vibrancy under all circumstances, Hannon collaborated with special effects makeup expert David Stoneman. Together, they crafted “Cynthia Green,” a custom blend designed to reflect light and stay true to its bold hue across different lighting environments.
Despite the extensive and demanding process, Erivo remained patient and professional throughout, never complaining about the transformation process. Hannon also praised Erivo’s “perfect skin,” which made the makeup application smooth and flawless, with no issues during the application or wear.
Fans can expect to see Erivo’s stunning portrayal of Elphaba when Wicked hits theaters on November 22, promising a visually striking adaptation of the beloved musical.
