Ariana Grande, the star of the recently released movie Wicked, has shared the emotional reason behind her decision not to return as a judge on The Voice. Speaking on the Las Culturistas podcast, Grande explained that her deep emotional attachment to the contestants made it difficult for her to continue as a judge on the popular singing competition.
“I got so emotionally attached to everyone. That’s my problem. I can’t really do that because I really get in,” Grande admitted. “I really get in there with everyone. I love everyone so much. I love meeting people, and I’ve felt so invested.”
Grande’s bond with the contestants on her season of The Voice was undeniable, as she developed personal connections with many of them. This attachment was so strong that she invited her team members, including Jim Allen, Sasha Allen, and Holly Forbes, to her family’s Thanksgiving dinner in 2021. Forbes later spoke about her experience, revealing the surprising warmth and generosity she encountered from Grande.
“The most unexpected thing about Ariana is just how big her heart is,” Forbes said. “She’s always checking on us. We got the chance to meet some of her close family members and friends, and she’s so loving to everyone.” Forbes also mentioned that, contrary to what some people might think, Ariana was genuine, real, and kind, qualities that truly stood out to her.
Singer Raquel Trinidad also shared how friendly Grande was, stating that she was “pleasantly surprised” by how warm and approachable Ariana was, even texting the contestants after their time together on the show.
Grande’s tenure as a judge on The Voice in 2021, alongside fellow mentors Kelly Clarkson, Blake Shelton, and John Legend, was marked by her genuine care for her team. However, the deep emotional involvement she experienced with her contestants made her realize that it wasn’t something she could continue long-term.
Though Grande won’t be returning to The Voice, her impact on her team members and the show’s fans remains lasting, with many praising her heartfelt approach to mentorship and her down-to-earth personality.
