Pedro Pascal has shared a deeply personal connection with his character in The Last of Us, revealing how his own life experiences align with his role as Joel in the hit series.
The 50-year-old actor, known for his iconic roles in Game of Thrones and The Mandalorian, portrays Joel, a protective father figure to Ellie, in the critically acclaimed adaptation. Pascal explained that his own protective nature is one of the key traits he shares with the character.
“I’m definitely very protective,” Pascal said during a press conference ahead of the release of The Last of Us Season 2, which premieres on April 13. “I’m protective of the people I love, and that’s probably the strongest trait I share with Joel.”

However, the emotional similarities between him and Joel also brought challenges for Pascal, especially when it came to the intense and emotionally charged scenes. Pascal admitted that the role had a profound impact on him, more so than any other character he’s portrayed.
“This experience has impacted me more than anything else I’ve done,” he said. “It’s difficult to separate myself from what the characters are going through, and that really takes a toll emotionally.”
He continued, sharing how the emotional weight of the role sometimes affected his personal well-being: “In some ways, it’s not the healthiest. I end up feeling their pain—I suppose I was in an unhealthy headspace.”
Despite the emotional challenges, Pascal expressed his excitement for the upcoming season and the love and dedication that everyone involved has put into the series. The Last of Us has garnered a passionate fanbase, and Pascal is eager to give them another season filled with the gripping drama they’ve come to love.
“There’s something so thrilling about bringing another season to an audience that really embraced the first,” Pascal said. “Everyone involved has poured their heart into this project.”
With Season 2’s release just around the corner, fans are eagerly anticipating the next chapter of Joel and Ellie’s journey. Pascal’s deep connection to his character promises another powerful, emotionally charged performance, making the new season one to look forward to.
