Prince Andrew, the estranged brother of King Charles III, and Prince Harry, his step-grandson, are expected to attend the coronation of the new King and Queen on May 6th. However, according to reports, both Princes will have limited roles in the ceremony.
While the Dukes will be seen at Westminster Abbey as members of the British royal family, they will have nothing to do at the ceremony. In contrast, the step-grandsons of King Charles, Gus Lopes, and Arthur Chatto, will have more duties to perform.
Gus, the son of Camilla’s daughter Laura and her husband Harry Lopes will carry his grandmother’s coronation robes at the event. Meanwhile, Arthur, the son of Princess Margaret’s daughter, Lady Sarah Chatto, will serve as a Page of Honour.
The coronation will carry on some centuries-old traditions and embrace some more modern aspects of the monarchy. One of the key roles in the ceremony – the Pages of Honour – is being carried out by younger royals or members of Camilla’s family.
In contrast, Prince Andrew, who is facing allegations of sexual assault and has been largely absent from public life, will attend the ceremony with a limited role. Similarly, Prince Harry, who stepped down as a senior working member of the royal family last year, will attend the coronation alone, while his wife, Meghan Markle, and their children will remain in California.
Despite his strained relationship with the royal family, Prince Harry’s attendance at the coronation is seen as an opportunity for the family to come together after the recent passing of Prince Philip. King Charles III’s coronation will mark the beginning of a new era for the British monarchy, and it remains to be seen how the family will continue to evolve under his reign.
