Hwang Dong-hyuk, the visionary behind Netflix’s global hit Squid Game, has finally revealed the symbolic meaning behind the mysterious shapes—circle, triangle, and square—featured on the guards’ uniforms. These simple geometric forms have become iconic representations of the show, but according to the Korean filmmaker, they carry a much deeper message rooted in social commentary.
In a recent press event attended by Dexerto, the 51-year-old creator explained that the concept originated from a childhood memory.
“I was quite literally thinking of myself as a kid… and the circle, triangle, square is exactly what you [draw] on the ground,” Hwang shared.
Shapes That Reflect Society and Class Structure
While the symbols may appear basic, Hwang clarified that they serve a significant narrative purpose. Within the fictional world of Squid Game, the shapes distinguish ranks among the masked guards. However, their meaning goes beyond just visual differentiation.

“It’s used in our show to show the different classes among the master guards,” he explained. “These simple and fundamental geometric shapes came to symbolize our show, as well as some of the issues that we face in current society.”
He added that the shapes embody the concept of “limitless competition in late capitalism,” hinting at the intense societal pressures and economic inequality portrayed throughout the dystopian series.
Hwang called this symbolism “a peculiar discovery” and expressed a personal attachment to the idea, noting how it became an unexpected yet powerful element of the show’s identity.
