Eddie Murphy Defends ‘Norbit’ as One of His Favorite Films Despite Criticism

Hollywood legend Eddie Murphy recently spoke out in defense of one of his most debated movies, Norbit, after an interviewer suggested it might be one of his worst films.

In an exclusive interview with Complex, the 64-year-old actor was quick to push back against the criticism, naming other films like The Adventures of Pluto Nash and Holy Man as lower points in his career instead.

“I love Norbit,” Murphy said. “Norbit came out right after I got that Oscar nomination. There were articles like, ‘How can he get an Oscar? He did this?’ They’re two different movies.”

Murphy also revealed that he co-wrote Norbit with his brother Charlie Murphy, emphasizing that they both find the film genuinely funny.

“Here’s the thing with Norbit: it came out and they gave me Razzie Awards for Worst Actress, Worst Actor, and Worst Actor of the Decade. And I was like, ‘Come on now, s*** ain’t that bad.’”

Known for his versatility, Murphy played multiple roles in Norbit, including the character’s overbearing and abusive wife, Rasputia—a performance that drew both laughs and criticism.

Despite mixed reviews, Murphy stands by Norbit as a proud part of his filmography, highlighting the distinction between that comedy and his Oscar-nominated work.
