Veteran TV host Maury Povich has opened up about his marriage to renowned journalist Connie Chung—and he’s not shy about admitting who was earning more when they first tied the knot.
During a candid chat with comedian Adam Friedland for Interview Magazine, Povich revealed that Chung’s success far outweighed his own at the time. In fact, he shared that his wife was making significantly more—around ten times his salary.
Reflecting on his life, the 87-year-old television personality credited much of his happiness to his marriage. When Friedland remarked that he seemed to have the “best life ever,” Povich quickly responded that it was all thanks to Chung.
“Only because I married Connie Chung,” he said.
The conversation took a humorous turn when Friedland jokingly called him a “gold digger.” Povich leaned into the joke, replying without hesitation, “Absolutely.”
He went on to emphasize the financial gap early in their relationship, noting, “My wife was making 10 times what I was making when we got married. How’s that?”
The couple, who have been married for over four decades, continue to share a strong bond built on mutual respect—and, as it seems, a sense of humor about their early financial dynamics.
In a previous interview with PEOPLE, Chung shed light on a side of her husband that the public rarely sees. She described Povich as far more intellectually curious than his on-screen persona might suggest.
“Maury’s got a completely different side that nobody knows about,” she said.
According to Chung, he is deeply engaged in reading and has a strong interest in politics and history. She even joked that despite his long-running television career, he could easily hold his own among intellectuals.
“He’s a voracious reader. He’s a political buff. He’s a history buff,” Chung shared, adding that he could “run circles around these intellectual snobs.”
