YouTube has officially expanded its Picture-in-Picture (PiP) feature to users worldwide, allowing viewers to continue watching videos in a floating mini-window while using other apps on their devices.
The update brings a long-requested multitasking upgrade to both iOS and Android users, marking a significant shift in how people consume video content on mobile devices.
What the PiP Feature Does
Picture-in-Picture allows users to:
- Shrink a YouTube video into a small movable window
- Continue watching while using other apps
- Drag or reposition the video anywhere on the screen
- Keep playback running in the background
This means users can now browse, chat, or work on other apps without stopping their video.
No Longer Limited to Premium or US Users
Previously, PiP was restricted to U.S. users or available only to paid subscribers in many regions.
With this rollout, the feature is now expanding globally for long-form, non-music videos, making it accessible to a much larger audience at no additional cost.
However, PiP for music videos remains limited to premium subscribers.
Premium Users Still Get Extra Benefits
Subscribers to YouTube Premium continue to enjoy additional perks, including:
- Background play for music content
- PiP access for a wider range of videos
- Ad-free viewing experience
A lighter version of the service, Premium Lite, also retains PiP support for select content.
Gradual Global Rollout
YouTube has confirmed that the feature will roll out gradually over the coming months, meaning users may not see it immediately on all devices.
To activate PiP, users typically need to:
- Update the YouTube app
- Play a long-form video
- Exit the app
- Let the video shrink into a floating window automatically
A Major Shift in Mobile Viewing
The update reflects a growing push toward multitasking-friendly streaming, especially as users increasingly consume content while switching between apps.
With PiP now expanding globally, YouTube is making mobile video consumption more flexible than ever.
