Apple users are urged to be vigilant as digital watchdog group Citizen Lab recently unveiled the presence of spyware connected to the Israeli firm NSO Group. This spyware has taken advantage of a recently uncovered vulnerability in Apple devices, potentially exposing user data and privacy.
Citizen Lab’s discovery came to light when they investigated the Apple device of an employee affiliated with a civil society group based in Washington. They determined that the vulnerability had been exploited to infect the device with NSO’s notorious Pegasus spyware, a powerful and invasive surveillance tool.
While Citizen Lab did not disclose the identity of the affected individual or organization, they emphasized the role of civil society in serving as an early warning system for detecting sophisticated cyberattacks.
The identified vulnerability allowed iPhones running the latest iOS version (16.6) to be compromised without any action required from the device owner. Apple responded promptly to the issues raised by Citizen Lab by updating its products to address the flaw.
Apple declined to provide further details on the matter, but Citizen Lab advised all Apple users to ensure their devices are up to date to protect against potential security threats.
As for NSO Group, they have yet to issue a formal response to the findings reported by Citizen Lab.
It’s important to note that the US government blacklisted the Israeli company NSO Group in 2021 due to alleged abuses, including the surveillance of journalists and government officials. This action was taken as a precautionary measure to address concerns regarding privacy and security.
