China’s Baidu launches its ChatGPT rival ERNIE Bot into Public

On Thursday, Almost three of China’s tech companies including Baidu, Baichuan Intelligent Technology, and Zhipu AI introduced artificial intelligence (AI) products after obtaining state approval as China quickened the deployment of AI.

Baidu, the Chinese online search provider, said in a statement its ChatGPT-like AI chatbot Ernie Bot would be completely publicized to the general public.

Two AI startups, Zhipu AIy, and Baichuan Intelligent Technology, also said that their AI chatbots would be officially launched to the public on Thursday.

All three tech firms said their developments had obtained government authorization.

Baidu’s shares were raised almost 4.5% in earlier trade in Hong Kong.

Unlike in Western nations where AI developments can be introduced without state permission, China demands firms to present security inspections and get permission before releasing mass-market AI products.

Management has recently hastened steps to help firms create AI as the technology increasingly becomes a priority of contest with the United States.

Local media in China reported that a total of 11 companies had obtained approvals from the government, including TikTok maker ByteDance and SenseTime Group.

Neither firm immediately answered requests for comment.

SenseTime’s shares earned about 4% in Hong Kong after the market opened.

Regulatory approvals were broadly expected after China issued a set of interim rules aimed at regulating productive AI products for the public that proceeded into development on August 15.

Earlier, firms were only allowed to run small-scale public trials of AI products but with the latest regulations, firms have broadened their AI product trials by allowing more features and engaging in more marketing.
