NASA is tracking a new asteroid that has a small chance of hitting Earth in about 20 years: on Valentine’s Day in 2046.
According to the European Space Agency, There is currently a 1 in 607 chance that the asteroid (2023 DW) will hit Earth. it may also have an effect on Valentine’s Days in the years 2047 to 2051.
The asteroid has been monitored by NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office, which believes the likelihood of it hitting Earth in 2046 is still “extremely small.”
NASA orbit analysts said they will continue to monitor the asteroid and update predictions as more data comes in.
However, According to NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), the asteroid currently registers at level 1 on the Torino scale, which means that it is “a routine discovery in which a pass near the Earth is predicted that poses no unusual level of danger.”
