Adam Sandler takes a cosmic leap in his latest film, “Spaceman,” where he ventures beyond the boundaries of outer space and into the intricacies of his character’s consciousness. The movie features Sandler as Jakub, an astronaut, alongside Carey Mulligan as Lenka, his Earthbound wife.
While the initial impression from the trailer suggests a narrative centered on marital dynamics set against the backdrop of “the edge of the solar system,” the film unfolds into a more profound exploration. “Spaceman” delves into Jakub’s internal world as he confronts the challenges of a solitary space journey, contending with the immense solitude of the cosmos and the complexities of his marriage.
After enduring months of isolation, Jakub encounters a mysterious, spider-like space entity named Hanuš, voiced by Paul Dano. Hanuš becomes Jakub’s companion on the spaceship, offering both emotional support and assistance. The story evolves as Jakub, six months into his mission, grapples with the realization that his marriage may not be intact upon his return to Earth.
Driven by a desire to mend his relationship with Lenka, Jakub seeks guidance from Hanuš, a creature from the dawn of time discovered hiding within the confines of his spacecraft. Together, they unravel the intricacies of Jakub’s faltering marriage before it reaches a point of no return.
Directed by Johan Renck and based on the 2017 novel “Spaceman of Bohemia” by Czech author Jaroslav Kalfař, the film delves into themes of isolation, introspection, and cosmic mysteries. “Spaceman” is set to premiere at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival in February, followed by a theatrical release on February 23 and streaming on Netflix from March 1. The movie also features Isabella Rossellini, Kunal Nayyar, and Lena Olin.
