As Kanye West continues to push back against cancel culture, Adidas CEO Bjørn Gulden has seemingly extended an olive branch to his former estranged partner, expressing regret over their split.
During a conversation on the Norwegian podcast In Good Company, Gulden delved into the complex issue surrounding Kanye West’s strained relationship with the sportswear giant.
Gulden began by acknowledging Kanye West’s exceptional creativity, describing him as one of the world’s most creative individuals, spanning the realms of music and what he referred to as “street culture.” He lauded their successful collaboration, which gave rise to the highly successful Yeezy line.
However, the CEO also addressed the controversies that erupted when Kanye made statements deemed problematic. These statements ultimately led to Adidas severing ties with the rapper and discontinuing associated products. Gulden expressed his belief that Kanye West did not intend harm with his statements and emphasized that he did not view Kanye as a bad person. Instead, he suggested that the words had unintended negative consequences.
Reflecting on the separation from Kanye, Gulden described it as a “very sad” outcome. He underscored the substantial loss of business resulting from the termination of one of the most successful collaborations in history. The CEO also acknowledged that such situations can occur when working with third parties, whether they are athletes or entertainers, and characterized it as a natural part of the business.
Adidas officially cut ties with Kanye West in October, following a series of controversial and anti-Semitic statements made by the rapper. This conversation comes against the backdrop of Kanye West’s vocal resistance to cancel culture, sparking discussions about the boundaries between creativity and accountability.
