Aquaman 2 director James Wan recently clarified that the upcoming sequel to the Aquaman franchise was never intended to center around the character Mera, portrayed by Amber Heard.
Amber Heard, who reprises her role as the sea princess Mera in “Aquaman and The Last Kingdom,” has faced significant challenges due to negative attention surrounding her personal life during her defamation trial against ex-husband Johnny Depp.
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, James Wan, a director aged 46, expressed his perspective on the situation. He conveyed, “The intention for the second installment was never to put the spotlight on Amber’s character. Instead, it’s centered around Jason Momoa’s character, Arthur Curry, and his half-brother Orm, portrayed by Patrick Wilson.”
Wan elaborated, “From the outset, I made it clear that the first film was a blend of romance, action, and adventure, while the second installment leans more towards a bromantic action-adventure.”
Amber Heard revealed that her participation in Aquaman 2 was initially met with resistance from the film’s team, given the ongoing legal battles with Johnny Depp. She explained that she had to fight diligently to maintain her role in the film.
Heard further expressed how Depp’s public attacks on her character had taken a toll on her career.
As the controversy surrounding Amber Heard continues, Aquaman 2 is set to focus on different aspects of the Aquaman universe, with a spotlight on Arthur Curry and his brother Orm, leaving Mera’s role in the background.
