On January 15, the BAFTA Film Awards announced the nominations, recognizing Grande, 31, for her role as Glinda in Wicked: Part One and Gomez, 32, for her performance in Emilia Pérez. Both stars landed nominations in the Best Supporting Actress category, a testament to their talent and versatility.

This recognition comes shortly after both Grande and Gomez, along with Miley Cyrus, received their first Golden Globe nominations, making this awards season a particularly memorable one for the trio.

Compelling Performances in Acclaimed Films

Emilia Pérez, a musical drama exploring redemption and the drug trade, has been a standout this year, earning an impressive 11 nominations. These include nods for Best Film, Best Director, and Best Leading Actress for Karla Sofía Gascón. Gomez’s nomination places her alongside her co-star Zoe Saldaña in the Supporting Actress category, highlighting the film’s exceptional performances.

On the other hand, Wicked: Part One garnered seven nominations, including Best Leading Actress for Cynthia Erivo. Grande’s portrayal of Glinda earned her a Supporting Actress nod, adding to the film’s accolades. However, the adaptation of the Wizard of Oz prequel missed out on top categories like Best Film and Best Director.

A Somber Moment for Hollywood

The BAFTA announcement came amidst the ongoing Los Angeles wildfires, which have devastated over 14,000 acres and claimed at least 25 lives, as reported by CNN. The tragedy cast a shadow over the celebratory atmosphere, with BAFTA’s film chair, Sara Putt, offering her condolences. “Our thoughts are very, very much with everyone impacted by this dreadful time,” she told Variety.

Anticipation for the BAFTA Film Awards

The 2025 BAFTA Film Awards are set to take place on February 16 at London’s Royal Festival Hall. Fans and industry insiders eagerly await the event, where Ariana Grande and Selena Gomez will vie for one of the most prestigious honors in film. Their nominations not only mark a personal milestone but also reinforce their growing influence in Hollywood.
