Bridgerton is tapping into true royal history for its latest season, and fans are in for a treat. At the Season 3 premiere of the hit Netflix series, actress Florence Hunt revealed a fascinating detail about her character’s wardrobe: she wore a dress made from the same fabric as one of Princess Diana’s iconic dresses.
“I wore this beautiful blue dress, and it was cut from the same fabric as a dress Princess Diana wore,” shared Hunt, 17, during an interview with PEOPLE at the New York City premiere. “It was a piece of the fabric used for one of Princess Diana’s dresses, which is incredible. It’s crazy, yeah,” she added, noting that this dress is her favorite look for her character, Hyacinth Bridgerton, in the new season.
The actress, who has charmed audiences with her portrayal of the youngest Bridgerton sibling, also shared a special behind-the-scenes moment. “The wardrobe team let me keep a little piece of the fabric after filming,” Hunt said. “I just thought it was amazing. I felt like I was wearing a piece of history.”
Princess Diana is remembered for her timeless style, particularly her stunning blue dresses. In 1981, she wore an ethereal off-the-shoulder Bellville Sassoon ballgown at a Victoria & Albert Museum exhibition in London. Four years later, she dazzled in an emerald blue Emanuels gown while dancing with Prince Charles during the Melbourne royal tour.
In 1987, Diana sported a light blue strapless chiffon gown by Catherine Walker at the Cannes Film Festival. One of her last notable appearances in 1997 saw her in a sparkling blue shift dress by Jacques Azagury in London. Each of these moments contributed to her enduring legacy as a fashion icon.
Bridgerton’s costume designer John Glaser has expertly woven these historical inspirations into the show’s elaborate costumes. According to British Vogue, Audrey Hepburn’s style in My Fair Lady influenced Eloise Bridgerton’s wardrobe, while Grace Kelly and Katherine Hepburn served as inspirations for Francesca Bridgerton’s outfits.
Beyond fashion, Bridgerton also draws architectural inspiration from Princess Diana’s heritage. In December 2020, show creator Chris Van Dusen revealed that the design of the Bridgerton family home was influenced by Althorp House, the Spencer family’s ancestral home. “The interior of Bridgerton House was inspired by my visit to Althorp when I was developing the show. Elegance. Opulence. And that #staircase,” Van Dusen wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter).
With such rich historical influences, Bridgerton’s third season promises to be a visual feast, blending the elegance of Regency-era fashion with the timeless style of modern royals. Fans of the series can look forward to seeing how these inspirations come to life on screen.
