Director Chris Columbus has expressed regret over Donald Trump’s cameo appearance in the beloved holiday classic Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, saying he wishes the scene could be removed.
In a recent interview, Columbus opened up about his feelings towards the cameo, admitting that although he feels the scene no longer fits with the film’s legacy, he’s unable to remove it due to the complexities surrounding such a change.
“I just wish it was gone,” Columbus said, referring to Trump’s brief appearance as himself, where he gives directions to the young protagonist, Kevin McCallister, played by Macaulay Culkin. “I can’t cut it. If I cut it, I’ll probably be sent out of the country.”
The director’s comments come years after the film’s release, with the scene in question having sparked mixed reactions from audiences, especially in light of Trump’s later political career. Some fans have criticized the inclusion, while others argue that it is simply a product of its time.
Though the cameo is considered a minor part of the film, Columbus’ candid remarks highlight the evolving relationship between movies and their cultural context, especially as older films are viewed through a modern lens.
While Columbus wishes he could have made the change, he seems resigned to the fact that, in the world of cinema, certain moments are etched into history — and sometimes, even a brief cameo can’t be easily erased.
