In a surprising turn of events, director Christopher Landon has officially stepped away from the Scream franchise, following the recent exits of leading actresses Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega.

Landon, who was initially set to direct the highly anticipated Scream VII, took to platform X (formerly Twitter) to share the unexpected news with horror movie enthusiasts. In a candid tweet, he revealed, “I guess now is as good a time as any to announce I formally exited Scream 7 weeks ago. This will disappoint some and delight others. It was a dream job that turned into a nightmare. And my heart did break for everyone involved. Everyone. But it’s time to move on.”

The director continued, adding, “I have nothing more to add to the conversation other than I hope Wes’ legacy thrives and lifts above the din of a divided world. What he and Kevin created is something amazing, and I was honored to have even the briefest moment basking in their glow.”

Landon’s departure comes in the wake of Melissa Barrera’s removal from the film due to controversies surrounding her social media posts related to the Middle East conflict. Addressing the upheaval triggered by Barrera’s dismissal on X, Landon shared, “Everything sucks. Stop yelling. This was not my decision to make.” Notably, this post has been since deleted.

Adding to the turbulence, it was announced a day later that Barrera’s co-star, Jenna Ortega, has also exited the franchise. Ortega cited scheduling conflicts with her commitments to the Netflix show, Wednesday, as the reason for her departure. The successive departures have fueled speculation and raised questions about the future direction of the iconic Scream franchise.

As the horror community processes these unexpected changes, the departure of both the director and key cast members adds an air of uncertainty to the production. Fans and industry insiders are left wondering about the ripple effects on the narrative, production timeline, and overall reception of Scream VII. The evolving story behind the scenes has certainly become as intriguing as the suspenseful narratives that the franchise is known for, leaving horror aficionados eagerly awaiting further developments.
