Disney and Pixar are set to revisit the enchanting Land of the Dead with Coco 2, the highly anticipated sequel to the beloved 2017 animated film. Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed the news during the company’s annual shareholder meeting, revealing that the film is currently in early development and slated for a theatrical release in 2029.
A Long-Awaited Sequel
While specific plot details remain under wraps, Iger assured fans that Coco 2 will stay true to the original’s heartfelt and adventurous spirit.
“Though the film is in its initial stages, we know it will be filled with humor, heart, and adventure,” Iger said. “We can’t wait to share more soon.”
The sequel will see the return of Coco director Lee Unkrich, alongside Adrian Molina, who co-directed the first film. Pixar veteran Mark Nielsen, known for his work on Toy Story 4 and Inside Out 2, will produce.
A Legacy of Success
The original Coco was a critical and commercial triumph, grossing over $800 million worldwide and winning two Academy Awards, including Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for Remember Me. The film followed Miguel, a young boy who dreams of becoming a musician despite his family’s long-standing ban on music. His journey to the Land of the Dead during Día de los Muertos led to a heartwarming story of family, legacy, and self-discovery.
Pixar’s Focus on Sequels
In recent years, Pixar has found massive success with sequels to beloved films, including Inside Out 2 (2024) and Incredibles 2 (2018). The latter became the highest-grossing animated film at the time with $1.24 billion, until Inside Out 2 surpassed it with $1.66 billion. Meanwhile, original films like Elemental (2023) and spin-offs like Lightyear (2022) have struggled to match the studio’s past box office dominance.

Alongside Coco 2, Pixar is also working on Toy Story 5, Incredibles 3, and new projects such as Elio and Hoppers.
A Return to the Spirit of ‘Coco’
With Coco 2 on the horizon, fans can expect another visually stunning and emotionally resonant adventure that celebrates the rich traditions of Día de los Muertos. As Pixar continues to build on its legacy, this sequel promises to bring audiences back into the magical world that made Coco a timeless favorite.
