The upcoming Superman star reflects on the “dark and gritty” portrayal and hints at a fresh, optimistic direction.
David Corenswet, set to headline the next Superman movie, recently opened up about his views on Henry Cavill’s portrayal of the Man of Steel. The 31-year-old actor had previously described Cavill’s Superman as “dark and gritty,” expressing interest in a more upbeat and optimistic interpretation for his own film.
In a 2019 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Corenswet said,
“I love the Henry Cavill dark and gritty take, but I would love to see the next one be very bright and optimistic.”
Elaborating on His Vision for Superman

In a recent interview with GQ, Corenswet expanded on his earlier remarks, calling his initial comment “the least interesting thing” he could have said. He emphasized the importance of diverse storytelling when it comes to such a legendary character.
“I think that’s the least interesting thing I could have said,” he told GQ.
The actor believes that iconic heroes like Superman require skilled writers and filmmakers to explore different facets of the character, cautioning against repetitive storytelling.
“They become boring if you just keep doing the same thing over and over again,” Corenswet explained.
Recognizing Previous Successes and Looking Forward
Corenswet praised how filmmakers have approached superhero stories differently over the years. He cited Chris Nolan’sdarker, grounded Batman trilogy as a parallel example and acknowledged how Zack Snyder and Cavill’s team brought a previously unseen side of Superman to the big screen.
“Just like Chris Nolan took Batman and did something darker and more grounded with the character, Zack Snyder and Henry Cavill explored a side of Superman that hadn’t been explored on the big screen,” he said.
Corenswet concluded by expressing excitement about the future:
“All I was saying was they’re doing it so well. Whenever they’re finished, I’d love to see the next one go the other way, and let’s see the other side.”
What This Means for the Next Superman Film
With Corenswet stepping into the legendary role, fans can expect a fresh perspective on Superman — one that may be lighter and more hopeful, contrasting with the darker tone popularized in recent years.
