Julia Garner is breaking her silence on what it was like to audition for one of the most iconic roles in modern biopic history—playing Madonna herself.
The Ozark star recently appeared on the SmartLess podcast, where she shared exclusive details about the intense audition process for the much-anticipated (and long-delayed) Madonna biopic. Known for her powerhouse acting skills, Garner revealed that stepping into the Queen of Pop’s shoes came with its own set of challenges—starting with impressing Madonna face-to-face.
“I had to dance and sing in front of her,” Garner recalled. “I wasn’t a trained dancer, so I had to learn choreography and convince her I could do it.”
The 30-year-old Emmy winner also expressed her deep admiration for the pop legend, sharing that she grew up listening to Madonna’s music. When the opportunity to audition came along, she knew it was something she had to try.

“I just kept asking myself, ‘What would Madonna do?’” she said. “She would own the room. So I did just that.”
Garner’s bold and fearless approach—channeling Madonna’s own rebellious spirit—may be exactly what made her stand out in the high-stakes casting process.
Madonna Biopic Still in Development
Although the biopic has been in the works for years, its production has faced several delays. Universal Pictures reportedly shelved the film in 2023. However, Madonna hasn’t given up on the project. In recent months, she’s teased on Instagram that she’s still working on the script.
Garner confirmed the movie isn’t off the table just yet.
“Yeah, I mean, that’s supposed to still happen,” she shared. “But I also feel like anything that’s great takes a long time.”
What We Know So Far
The Madonna biopic, which the pop icon herself is co-writing and was originally set to direct, aims to chronicle her meteoric rise from the streets of New York to global superstardom. Julia Garner is widely rumored to be the top pick to play the Material Girl, though official casting details remain under wraps.
Until the film hits the big screen, fans can only imagine how Garner’s fierce audition might translate into a full-blown performance.
