Renowned singer and Grammy winner Lizzo finds herself embroiled in yet another harassment lawsuit, just months after dealing with allegations of sexual harassment. The new lawsuit alleges that Lizzo played a part in fostering a toxic workplace environment.
In this recent complaint, Asha Daniels, who worked in Lizzo’s wardrobe department for the singer’s 2023 tour, has made troubling allegations against Amanda Nomura, Lizzo’s manager. According to Page Six, the lawsuit accuses Nomura of subjecting Daniels to emotional and physical harassment.
The lawsuit claims that Nomura made explicit threats, including statements like she would “kill a btch” and “stab a btch” if she couldn’t locate certain medications, and she directed these threats towards various staff members, including Daniels.
Perhaps more concerning is the accusation that, despite being employed by Lizzo, a black artist herself, Nomura allegedly used derogatory language towards black women. The lawsuit states that she openly referred to them as “dumb,” “useless,” and “fat.”
The allegations against Nomura don’t stop there. She is also accused of physically confronting a crew member who expressed intentions to quit, forcibly taking food from an employee’s hand, and repeatedly threatening to “kill a b*tch” if anyone attempted to replace her in her role.
Daniels further claims in the lawsuit that Nomura had previously caused her harm by rolling a garment rack over her foot.
What adds complexity to this situation is the assertion that both Lizzo and the employees of Big Grrrl Big Touring, Inc. (BGBT), the production company associated with Lizzo, were aware of Nomura’s alleged behavior.
In addition to the issues surrounding Nomura, Daniels details other instances of inappropriate conduct that occurred during her time working with Lizzo.
Daniels is seeking compensation for various claims, including those related to sexual and racial harassment, failure to address a hostile work environment, disability discrimination, and violations of labor laws.
This latest lawsuit intensifies the scrutiny surrounding Lizzo’s workplace environment and raises questions about the responsibilities of celebrities and their management teams in maintaining a safe and respectful workplace for their staff.
