Chart-topping artist Lizzo, known for her powerful music and commitment to social causes, recently found herself at the intersection of celebration and legal battles. The singer-songwriter was honored with the prestigious Quincy Jones Humanitarian Award at the Black Music Action Coalition (BMAC) gala in Los Angeles, an event recognizing her dedication to humanitarian causes. This recognition came on the heels of a second lawsuit filed against her by a former employee, adding complexity to her ongoing legal challenges.
A Night of Recognition and Gratitude
Lizzo’s acceptance of the Quincy Jones Humanitarian Award was a poignant moment during the BMAC gala, held at the luxurious Beverly Hilton hotel. The artist chose to forego the red carpet, taking to the stage with her Big Grrrl dancers, who spoke passionately about the support and belief Lizzo had shown them in their careers.
In a deeply emotional speech, Lizzo, with tears in her eyes, expressed her gratitude to BMAC for the award. She highlighted the unique nature of humanitarian awards, describing them as often uncelebrated and inherently selfless. “Being kind isn’t a skill; it’s something anyone can do—it’s a gift you give,” she remarked.
Lizzo also reflected on her earlier donation of $250,000 to Black-led organizations earlier in the year, emphasizing the importance of doing the right thing when nobody is watching. She praised those full-time humanitarians whose tireless efforts often go unnoticed and pledged to use her platform to shine a light on these unsung heroes. Her heartfelt speech conveyed a strong desire for a world where acts of goodness receive the recognition they deserve.
A Legal Cloud
However, amidst this celebratory occasion, a shadow loomed in the form of a second lawsuit. On the same day as the BMAC gala, a former tour stylist filed a lawsuit against Lizzo. The lawsuit alleges sexual and racial harassment, disability discrimination, retaliation, and assault, implicating both Lizzo and Big Grrrl Big Touring supervisors.
This legal action builds upon claims made earlier in the year when three former tour dancers accused Lizzo of subjecting them to weight-related interrogations and pressuring them into engaging in sexually explicit acts during performances.
Lizzo’s Ongoing Commitment
Despite the legal challenges, Lizzo has reaffirmed her commitment to her values. During her acceptance speech, she made it clear that she intends to stay true to herself, amplify the voices of marginalized individuals, and create safe spaces for Black, plus-sized women—a mission she considers both her purpose and an honor.
The recognition from BMAC underscores Lizzo’s impact on the music industry and her dedication to humanitarian causes. As the legal battles continue, her supporters hope she can navigate these challenges while continuing to inspire change and positivity through her music and activism.
