Meryl Streep and Anna Wintour are officially distant relatives, according to a new study conducted by Ancestry.com, reported by Entertainment Weekly.
The research revealed that the Hollywood legend and the former ‘Vogue’ editor-in-chief are sixth cousins through shared ancestors Elizabeth Kinsey and Thomas Smith.
A Fun Twist of Fate
The revelation is especially amusing considering Streep’s iconic role as Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada, a character inspired by Wintour’s real-life persona. Upon hearing the news, Streep expressed her delight:
“Well THAT explains EVERYTHING,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “As our ancestors would say, I am chuffed!”
Born in 1949—Meryl in June and Anna in November—the two women share more than just a year of birth; they are now linked through family history spanning generations.
Upcoming Film Sequel
The announcement comes ahead of the second installment of The Devil Wears Prada, set for release in May, in which Streep reprises her role as the formidable fashion editor opposite Anne Hathaway. The original movie was based on the novel by Lauren Weisberger
