Scarlett Johansson is navigating the world of parenting with thoughtful lessons on relationships, starting with teaching her 10-year-old daughter, Rose, about the emotional consequences of ghosting.
During her appearance on Today with Jenna and Friends on January 21, Johansson shared a recent conversation she had with Rose about dating and social interactions. The topic came up when Rose stopped talking to a boy who had feelings for her, simply because she didn’t feel the same way.
“She just stopped talking to him straight up, and he felt terrible,” Johansson explained. “That’s when I introduced her to the concept of ghosting.”
The Black Widow actress reflected on the emotional impact ghosting can have on someone, noting, “It really makes the other person feel terrible about themselves. It kind of sets them on this spiral.”
Johansson emphasized the importance of communication and closure in relationships, adding that she personally prefers being rejected directly, whether in person or over the phone, rather than being ghosted. “Ghosting someone is awful,” she said, highlighting how it leaves the other person without answers or closure.
The Hollywood star welcomed Rose in 2014 with her former husband, Romain Dauriac. In addition to Rose, Johansson is also a proud mother to her three-year-old son, Cosmo, whom she shares with her husband, Saturday Night Live comedian Colin Jost. The couple tied the knot in 2020.
Through her candid parenting moment, Scarlett Johansson underscored the importance of teaching children about empathy and respectful communication, even in the early stages of navigating friendships and relationships.
