In an exciting development for fans of the hit series, Stranger Things, the show’s creators, The Duffer brothers, have lifted the curtain on their latest project within the Stranger Things universe—a captivating play entitled “The First Shadow.”
In an exclusive interview with The Guardian, Matt and Ross Duffer shared behind-the-scenes insights into the creation of this theatrical venture, which is set to explore the enigmatic past of Henry Creel, also known as Vecna. This play will also introduce younger versions of beloved characters, including Jim Hopper (David Harbour), Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder), and Bob Newby (Sean Astin).
At the heart of the play is Henry Creel, portrayed on stage by Louis McCartney, and his romantic entanglement with a fresh character, Patty Newby (Ella Karuna Williams). Matt Duffer expressed the desire to delve into the humanity that Creel possessed before his transformation into a character reminiscent of the iconic Darth Vader.
Ross Duffer shed light on Patty’s role, stating, “Usually in a Stranger Things season, we introduce someone new to the world, and for us, it’s helpful in that it’s like a new pair of eyes for the audience to experience this world through. So Patty is following in those footsteps. The goal is that you have a much better understanding of Henry when seeing this and see a little bit more of how he got to where he is.”
Intriguingly, Ross hinted at the play’s connection to Stranger Things Season 5, revealing, “And then there’s a bit in the play that is starting to hint at where we’re headed with the final season of the show. That was always the balancing act.”
Directed by Stephen Daldry, known for his work on The Crown, the play holds the potential for a Broadway transfer contingent on its initial success. “Stranger Things: The First Shadow” is slated to debut before the release of Stranger Things Season 5 on Netflix in 2025, promising an immersive and connected narrative that will leave fans eagerly anticipating the unfolding mysteries within the Stranger Things universe.
