A new study suggests that cutting off mobile internet access for just two weeks may significantly improve mental well-being, attention span, and cognitive performance, with effects comparable to reversing up to a decade of brain ageing.
The research, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in 2025, indicates that reducing smartphone dependence may not only improve focus but also support mental health recovery in a relatively short period.
Study Shows Rapid Cognitive Improvements
Researchers analyzed 467 participants with an average age of 32 to examine whether limiting mobile internet access could reverse negative cognitive effects linked to excessive smartphone use.
Participants were given an app that blocked mobile internet access, effectively turning smartphones into basic devices limited to calls and text messaging.

Over the two-week period, average daily screen time dropped significantly—from 314 minutes to 161 minutes.
Mental Health and Attention Benefits
The results showed notable improvements in mental health, including reduced anxiety and depression levels. Researchers also found increased subjective well-being, with participants reporting greater happiness and life satisfaction.
In addition, sustained attention improved significantly, with performance levels comparable to individuals roughly 10 years younger in cognitive age.
Why the Improvements Happened
According to the study, several factors contributed to the cognitive gains:
- Improved sleep quality
- Increased social interaction
- Better self-regulation and reduced digital distraction
These combined effects helped participants regain focus and emotional balance within a short time frame.
No Perfect Detox Required
Interestingly, the study found that even partial compliance with reduced internet usage still led to benefits, although full adherence produced stronger results.
This suggests that a complete digital detox may not be necessary to see improvements in mental health and brain function.
A Balanced Digital Future
While smartphones remain essential in daily life, researchers emphasize the importance of balancing connectivity with mental well-being. Reducing screen time—even temporarily—may offer measurable benefits for brain health and overall quality of life.
