On Friday, the United Nations warned that “many more will die” as a result of Israel’s ongoing siege of the Gaza Strip, saying basic services in the Palestinian territory were “crumbling.”
Philippe Lazzarini, commissioner general for the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, said, “As we speak people in Gaza are dying, they are not only dying from bombs and strikes, soon many more will die from the consequences of (the) siege imposed on the Gaza Strip.”
“Basic services are crumbling, medicine is running out, food and water are running out, the streets of Gaza have started overflowing with sewage.”
According to Israeli officials, the latest escalation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict started when the Hamas militants crossed into Israel from its southern border on October 7, killing more than 1,400 people.
Israel has responded with relentless air and artillery strikes on Gaza that have killed more than 6,000 people, according to health authorities in Gaza.
Iran, an essential source of financial and military backing for Hamas, praised the October 7 Hamas attack while rejecting any involvement in its planning or execution.
