On Sunday, June 15, the official Instagram account of King Charles and Queen Camilla shared a heartfelt post featuring two nostalgic photos. The first was a black-and-white image of a young Charles and Princess Anne being pushed on a swing by their late father, Prince Philip. The second showed Queen Camilla with her own father, the late Major Bruce Shand.
The caption read, “To all Dads everywhere, we wish you a happy Father’s Day today,” offering a warm message to fathers around the world. However, the gesture came against the backdrop of a continued estrangement between the monarch and his younger son, the Duke of Sussex.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were notably absent from the Trooping the Colour festivities on Saturday, June 14—marking the third such event since King Charles ascended the throne. Their exclusion highlights the unresolved rift that began in 2020 when the couple stepped down from their royal duties and relocated to California.
The split was further compounded by legal battles over Prince Harry’s right to U.K. state-funded security. Earlier this year, a judge rejected Harry’s latest appeal to reinstate those protections—a decision he said poses a threat to his family’s safety.
In a candid interview with the BBC on the same day the ruling was announced, Prince Harry revealed his desire to mend ties with the royal family, particularly his father. “I would love reconciliation with my family. There’s no point in continuing to fight anymore,” he said. Reflecting on King Charles’ ongoing cancer treatment, he added, “Life is precious. I don’t know how much longer my father has.”
Despite expressing a wish to reconnect, Harry admitted that the security issue remains a key barrier to healing the divide. “He [King Charles] won’t speak to me because of this security stuff,” he explained, while also admitting, “I can’t see a world” in which he would bring Meghan and their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, back to the U.K. without appropriate protection.
