Former professional goalkeeper Alex Manninger has died at the age of 48 following a tragic accident at a railway crossing near Salzburg, Austria.
According to local authorities, the former Austria international was driving when his vehicle was struck by a train at a crossing operated by the Salzburger Lokalbahn. Emergency responders arrived quickly at the scene, but attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.
Police confirmed that the driver was alone in the vehicle and that the train operator was not injured in the incident.
A Career Across Europe
Manninger enjoyed a long and respected football career, earning 33 international caps for Austria national football team.
At club level, he is best remembered for his time with Arsenal FC between 1997 and 2001, where he was part of the squad that won both the Premier League and FA Cup in the 1997–98 season.
