For the first time after a century, Cricket will be part of the Olympic Games. The formal announcement was made following the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) approval during the 141st IOC Session held in Mumbai, India.
The recent inclusion of cricket in the Olympic Games has been a topic of discussion for several years, and the Organizing Committee for the 2028 Olympics recommended the IOC consider adding this extraordinarily famous sport to the lineup.
The bid received unanimous approval during the IOC session, marking a historic moment for the cricketing community and Olympic sports in general.
ICC Chairman Greg Barclay said, “We are thrilled that cricket’s inclusion in the LA28 Olympic Games has been confirmed by the IOC Session today.
To have the opportunity to showcase our great sport at the LA28 Games and hopefully, many Olympic Games to come will be great for players and fans alike.
I’d like to thank the International Olympic Committee and LA28 for their support and for their trust in our organization’s ability to deliver a world-class event and countless new Olympic fans from all over the world.
The innings have just begun, and we can’t wait to see where this incredible journey leads.”
This addition to the Olympic roster isn’t restrained to just cricket. The IOC has extended the Olympic program to include five sports in total.
Alongside cricket, baseball/softball, flag football, lacrosse, and squash are scheduled to make their Olympic debut in 2028.
These additions are noticed as a noteworthy step in diversifying the sports included in the world’s most prestigious multi-sport event.
One of the most notable aspects of this expansion is that cricket will be played in the T20 format, offering fast-paced, thrilling matches that are likely to captivate a global audience.
