Novak Djokovic, the world’s No. 2 ranked tennis player, added another historic achievement to his illustrious career by winning the US Open on Sunday. Djokovic defeated Daniil Medvedev, the No. 3 seed, in a thrilling men’s final, securing his record 24th grand slam singles title.
The Serbian tennis legend’s victory at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York extended his remarkable legacy in the sport and saw him match the all-time grand slam record held by Margaret Court.
Djokovic’s path to victory was reminiscent of his dominant form, particularly in the first set, where he faced no break points and delivered 12 winners in nine games. His success at winning the first set at the US Open had been exceptional, with a record of 72-1, with the sole loss coming in the 2016 final.
The second set, however, was a more closely contested battle. Djokovic and Medvedev engaged in an intense back-and-forth struggle, culminating in Djokovic’s 7-5 tiebreak victory after nearly two hours.
With the momentum on his side and a fourth US Open title within reach, Djokovic continued to shine, needing just one championship point to secure the historic title. At 36 years old, Djokovic became the oldest man to win the US Open singles title in the Open era, surpassing Ken Rosewall’s record set in 1970.
Djokovic’s remarkable 2023 season included victories in three out of four grand slam events. He reached the final of every major tournament, tied Rafael Nadal’s record with 22 grand slam titles at the Australian Open, set a new men’s record with 23 titles at the French Open, but faced defeat in the Wimbledon final against Carlos Alcaraz.
The Serbian superstar’s return to the United States was notable as he was previously unable to enter the country for two years due to Covid-19 vaccination requirements. However, with the lifting of vaccine restrictions for non-US travelers, Djokovic made a triumphant comeback and achieved yet another milestone in his career.
Looking ahead, Djokovic now has the opportunity to surpass Margaret Court and become the all-time winningest player in grand slam history at the Australian Open in January 2024. Despite the challenges and uncertainties he faces, Djokovic’s passion for the sport and his remarkable journey continues to captivate tennis fans worldwide.
