Munich, June 5 – Cristiano Ronaldo silenced his German critics on Wednesday night by scoring the decisive goal in Portugal’s 2-1 win over Germany, securing a place in the UEFA Nations League final.
The 39-year-old forward ended a long-standing winless streak against Germany by netting his record-extending 137th international goal, a close-range tap-in in the 68th minute. This victory marks Portugal’s first triumph over Germany after five straight defeats – Ronaldo’s longest drought against any national team.
Wirtz Strikes First for Germany
Germany struck first just minutes into the second half after a scoreless but competitive opening 45 minutes. Youngster Florian Wirtz dazzled with a weaving run through Portugal’s midfield and finished it off with a low header, putting the hosts ahead in the 48th minute.
Portugal quickly responded through substitute Francisco Conceição, who charged 35 meters down the pitch, evading defenders and curling a stunning equaliser past Marc-André ter Stegen in the 60th minute.
Ronaldo Clinches It for Portugal
Just eight minutes later, Nuno Mendes broke free on the wing and delivered a perfect low cross into the box, allowing Ronaldo to seal the win with a simple finish. The goal sent Portugal through to Sunday’s final, where they will meet either Spain or France.

The win also continued Roberto Martínez’s strong run as Portugal manager and gave fans hope of repeating their Nations League glory from 2019.
Tactical Tweaks Make the Difference
Despite four players recently returning from Champions League glory, Portugal started sluggishly amid a 10-minute weather delay caused by a hailstorm in Munich. Germany initially controlled the tempo, but couldn’t maintain their rhythm against Portugal’s pressing tactics.
Portugal’s substitutions proved decisive, especially the introduction of Conceição, who provided energy and flair on the wings.
Germany Fall Short at Home
The loss ended Julian Nagelsmann’s near-flawless run as Germany boss, marking only his second defeat in 18 games. Munich-born Karim Adeyemi came closest to levelling late on, hitting the crossbar with a thunderous strike, but it wasn’t enough.
Germany will now compete for third place in Stuttgart on Sunday.
