Green Party member Golriz Ghahraman has tendered her resignation amidst accusations of theft from two separate apparel businesses—one in Wellington and another in Auckland. The police are actively investigating the claims against her, although she is not currently facing criminal charges.
In 2017, Ghahraman, a former UN human rights attorney, made history as New Zealand’s first refugee in government, having been granted political asylum along with her family after leaving Iran during her childhood. She once held the justice portfolio for her party.
Citing work-related stress as a factor, Ghahraman admitted that her behavior had been “completely out of character.” In a statement, she expressed deep remorse, saying, “I have let down a lot of people, and I am very sorry.”
The decision to resign followed the release of CCTV footage allegedly capturing Ghahraman stealing a high-end handbag from a store in Auckland. Despite not facing criminal charges, Ghahraman acknowledged in her statement that her actions had fallen short of the public’s high expectations for elected officials.
“It’s not a behavior I can explain because it’s not rational in any way, and after medical evaluation, I understand I’m not well,” Ghahraman added. Importantly, she emphasized her reluctance to make excuses for her actions.
As the police continue their investigation into the theft allegations, Ghahraman’s resignation marks a significant development in the political landscape, raising questions about the future trajectory of her career and the impact on the Green Party.
