Public safety officials announced the somber outcome on Wednesday afternoon, stating that “the subject in this incident was pronounced deceased.” The situation escalated when a sheriff’s office detail attempted to serve the eviction notice and was met with gunfire from someone inside the residence. A deputy sustained a minor injury unrelated to gunfire while taking evasive action.
Local law enforcement, including the Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office and the Pittsburgh Police, responded promptly to the incident. The area was evacuated, and residents were urged to avoid the vicinity of the 4800 block of Broad Street and N. Mathilda Street in the Garfield neighborhood. A neighbor recounted the terrifying moments when authorities attempted to make contact with the occupant of the home. She described hearing gunshots and recounted her efforts to seek shelter. “I was trying to get down to the basement, but I was holed up in my work office because the bullets were so close,” she said. “After that, I just was able to make it, crawl down to the basement.”

Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Rocco Gagliardi emphasized the importance of evacuating the vicinity while emergency crews worked to bring the standoff to a peaceful resolution. “Our number one goal is to make sure everyone evacuates this area… especially those who may still be stuck inside houses like they were this morning,” he stated.
