In a move echoing the precautionary measures taken at Pisa’s famous leaning tower, Bologna’s Garisenda Tower, a medieval gem that mirrors its iconic counterpart in tilt, has been temporarily closed due to fears of potential structural instability.
Constructed in the 12th century, the 47-meter (154ft) Garisenda Tower, leaning at a distinct four-degree angle, has long been a significant landmark on Bologna’s skyline. However, recent monitoring revealed fluctuations in the tower’s tilt, leading authorities to characterize the situation as “highly critical.”
To mitigate potential risks, authorities have embarked on the construction of a 5-meter (16ft) high barrier encircling the tower. This protective measure serves a dual purpose: containing potential debris in the event of a collapse and safeguarding nearby structures and individuals. Metal rockfall nets will also be installed around the tower to enhance safety measures.
The closure, initiated in October after sensors detected changes in the tower’s tilt, comes after tests exposed degradation in the foundational components. The municipal council, recognizing the urgency of the situation, has formulated a civil protection plan, with the barrier construction marking the initial phase of making the site safe.
While the barrier is set to be completed early next year, the Garisenda Tower and the plaza beneath it are expected to remain closed for several years. This extended closure is necessitated by the comprehensive restoration work required to address the tower’s structural concerns.
Estimates place the cost of the barrier alone at €4.3 million (£3.7 million). In response to this financial challenge, the city has launched a crowdfunding campaign, appealing to both local residents and admirers worldwide. The initiative underscores the collective effort required to preserve one of Bologna’s most cherished symbols.
The restoration project is being described as an “extraordinary challenge,” emphasizing the need for commitment not only from the city’s residents but also from global enthusiasts who appreciate the historical significance of Bologna and its iconic Garisenda Tower. As restoration efforts unfold, the city anticipates a renewed and fortified future for this architectural marvel, reaffirming its place in the cultural heritage of Bologna.
